Spring Green

A surprise snowfall on the last Saturday in February featured stubborn winter weather that just won't go away. For months we've had grey day after grey day. Blue skies and the greening of things around us can't come soon enough.

Speaking of green, I am enjoying Courtenay's freshly painted and reworked Fifth Street Bridge. Both lanes officially opened on February 17, 2022 - just in time for spring.

The bridge opening is sure to herald a busier downtown Courtenay. Patios and outdoor areas, such as the one across from the Courtenay & District Museum & Palaeontology Centre, are a magnet for people on sunny days who just want to take a break and enjoy life for a while.

Children will soon be on spring break from Comox Valley schools (March 19 - April 3, 2022) and having fun like they should be. Many kids may be colouring Easter eggs or joining in Easter egg hunts on Sunday, April 17, 2022.

Spring colours like pinks, yellows, and purples are sure to lift our spirits. A favourite colour of mine is robin-egg blue. I've experienced my share of spring seasons but I have yet to find a nest of those exquisitely blue coloured robin eggs. Maybe this year if I'm lucky I might stumble upon one. I think robins start building their nests around April, so you never know. I love to see them hopping about lawns and grasses looking for worms. Apparently they like to sing in the mornings, dine early on worms, then round off the afternoon with a bit of fruit. What a great routine.

It has definitely been comforting to see new buds on trees, emerging tulips and daffodils, and purple and white crocuses popping up here and there. Time to say adios to winter and hello to spring as we rapidly approach its official first day on Sunday, March 20th.

Thanks for reading!
